Do you already have a life vision? Do you know exactly what you want your life to look like in 20 years? Probably not, but do you have a clear picture of what you want in life? In this article, I’ll show you how to make your life vision in a very simple way. A life vision is the most important part of the start of your life’s journey. If you don’t know where you’re going then you don’t know what to do, it’s simple.
If you want to be successful in life, whatever that is for you. You have to have a life vision. All successful people and businesses have a very clear vision of what they want. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama and many more.
This post is for those who don’t have a clear picture of what they want out of life. This article includes the following
- What exactly is a life vision?
- Getting into the right mindset before developing your vision
- How to create your ideal self
- How you can develop your life vision step by step
- The ultimate way to create your legacy
- Why you should be flexible with your life vision
What Exactly Is A Life Vision?
A life vision is bigger than just goals, it’s about who you want to be, what you want to experience and what legacy you want to leave behind. Then with this vision in mind, you can set goals. And then with these goals, you’re working towards your vision.
You might ask: “What happens if I’m living my life vision?” Well, that’s a good question. First, your life vision has to be so big that it almost seems impossible, like a ‘perfect life’, this will take very long to achieve, if at all. Secondly, while you’re working towards your life vision and enjoying the process, your life vision will change. Thus you’ll have to adjust accordingly.
“But why should I then make a life vision in the first place?” You need something to work towards so you know what to do on a daily basis. But you also have to know that your life is perfect as it is right now. Everything that is, is meant to be that way. If you’re currently broke then it’s for a reason. Maybe the Universe is challenging you to fix it on your own. Or testing how you’ll respond to it.
“I believe that everything happens for a reason.”
Getting Into The Right Mindset Before Developing Your Vision
Before you start developing your life vision you must get into the right state of mind. This mindset you need is a mindset without boundaries, beliefs and external pressure.
When I was a child and someone asked me what I wanted to be, I always had a different answer. When I was around 5 years old, I would say I wanted to be happy. When I was around 10-year old I said I wanted to become a professional soccer player. When I was 13 years old I said I wanted to become a guitar player.
You see what I mean with no boundaries? You have to get inside the mind of a child, anything is possible there are no limits to what you can achieve and want to achieve. Besides that, you should also let go of all the beliefs you have about yourself and about who you are right now. This is about who you want to be and what you want to experience so right now it doesn’t make sense to hold onto your self-image. Maybe one aspect of your life vision is already in your life.
And last but not least, you should let go of all expectations of others, it’s your life we’re talking about now. What you were told you had to be by your parents or all of your friends you have right now, just let them go for this exercise. If you have kids it might be hard because you have a level of responsibility towards them as you have chosen to have them. Later on, we’ll include them in your life vision, for now, let them go.
Now, you’re in the right mindset to start creating your life vision. Make sure you take notes on the following pieces. You’ll want to create a file for this, you can do this in Word, Google Drive, Evernote, on paper or wherever you like to write it down. You’ll be constantly changing it so it would be best to keep it digital.
I highly recommend Evernote. I use it as my second brain, and I don’t know what I would do without it.
I still use the free version and I take A LOT of notes, so I think you’ll be good to go with the free version too.
How To Create Your Ideal Self
It’s very important to know who you want to become before you start working on yourself. To become the greatest version of yourself you have to know what you want to eliminate, keep and develop.
The categories you should think about, when creating your ideal self, are
- Physical appearance
- Your ideal day
You have to figure out yourself what you want in these areas and maybe you can come up with more areas, there are no limits. Now, write down your ideas about who the best version of yourself is.
When you have created this best version of yourself you now can look for ways how to achieve that. Take one step at a time to make it yourself easier and be consistent. Think about eliminating things you don’t want to do anymore. Look for the situations in life to create the things you want for yourself.
In my life, I developed a new belief when I got an epiphany at 17 years old. I was in a depression in that year and isolated myself mentally from the world for 3 months to think about me and my purpose. It was a very dark place I had to go to before realizing that I’m the only one who is going to decide what my life is going to look like.
It’s very easy to say the government should lower the taxes or the weather makes me tired thus I have no energy to work on my side hustle. But that’s not going to solve your problems. I said to myself: “I’m going to work on myself until I arrive at my destination, no matter how hard it gets.” And believe me, I’ve had many setbacks and failures already, but I keep going until I die.
“I believe that you can achieve anything you want in life, as long as you’re prepared to give it everything you got.”
How You Can Develop Your Life Vision Step By Step
A life vision in my eyes consists of two things.
- How your perfect life would look like
- All the experiences you want to have in your life
When you know how your perfect life looks like, you’ll be reminded of it when you’re asking yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing. If it isn’t in line with your life vision then you should ask yourself if it’s a process you have to go through or if you shouldn’t be doing it at all.
And if you got all the experiences you want to have in life on a simple list, it’s easier to overview and see what you can do this year, quarter, month, week or day.
First of all, think of all areas your life consists of. This way you know you’ll not forget a part of your life. For me it’s the following
- Mission & Purpose
- Knowledge & Skills
- Relationship (significant other, not in a relationship right now)
Now you have some examples, don’t just take it over for yourself and write everything down that I did because everyone has different life areas or calls them differently or has different priorities. This is also the same for me, it’s constantly changing.
“The only things you can be sure about in life are change and death.”
We’ll start with how your perfect life would look like.
Your Perfect Life
Just to make sure you don’t get wrong expectations, the ‘perfect’ life is something that almost doesn’t exist. It’s like having complete balance in life, which will never really happen. Just know that you should strive for continuous improvement instead of perfection. Every time you get closer to your ‘perfect’ life, you celebrate.
Now you know that we can finally start with the steps.
Step #1: Visualize your ‘perfect’ life
The first step to creating your ‘perfect’ life is to visualize it. Ask yourself questions or just go through a ‘perfect’ day in your head and write down what you would do every hour.
If you are afraid you’re forgetting something, think back on the life areas and visualize what you would do in each area. And if you come up with something that you haven’t created an area for, do it now.
To help you a bit with visualizing, here are some questions you could ask yourself.
- What does my ‘perfect’ life look like?
- What do you want more of in your life?
- What do you want less of in your life?
- Is the area health/money or any other area of my life where I want it to be?
- Yes, how can I keep this going?
- No, how does my ideal health (any other area) situation look like?
- What do I want to do every day for the rest of my life?
I hope some of these questions may help you. Write everything that comes up down.
Step #2: Now, break it up into parts
Now you’re going to order everything you came up within the different areas of your life. This way it’s easier to track where there is a need for a lot of improvement, and where you’re already on track.
So you’re swimming every morning with your children at your villa at the beach before being picked up by your personal trainer to go to the gym? Time with your children fits into the area ‘family’, swimming could be ‘health & fitness’ as does the personal trainer. You know what I mean? Good, do it!
Adjust the areas of your life where needed. Nothing is good or bad here.
Step #3: Your ‘perfect’ day
You now know what your ‘perfect’ life consists of and which areas it includes.
What we’re going to do now is create your ‘perfect’ day for each area of your life. Here’s an example of one of my ‘perfect’ days of an area of my life
To wake up refreshed and have a cold shower. Having a healthy energizing breakfast made by my personal chef and nutritionist. Afterward having a run on the beach to the gym where I’ll have a workout with my partner and personal trainer. When that’s done I’ll have an amazing meal, made by my personal chef again. After the meal, I’ll take a nap with the whole family. Then going to the forest with the family to have an amazing experience in nature. After having done all of this I’ll get a full body checkup to see if my health is up to date. In the night I’ll go into our sauna with my partner.
Can you guess which area of my life this is?
As you can see I didn’t write down all hours of the day and what I’m doing exactly because I like to stay flexible. (See even my ‘perfect’ day isn’t perfect ;p) I recommend you do whatever feels good. I wrote this all down in 1 minute because I know a lot about what I want, where I’m working towards and who I am.
If you can do this too, awesome! If you can’t do this, it could help to write down every hour of the day so you have something to hold on to. If you like to write it down in as many details as possible, great. If you don’t know all the details yet, don’t worry, it will come.
Now write everything down somewhere, from step 1 to 3. I use Evernote and google docs to save all of my personal stuff just so I never lose it or can print it out whenever I want. I recommend you to do it digitally as well.
Well, now you know what you want. It doesn’t have to be ‘perfect’, if you take these steps and actually do something with it then you should already be proud of yourself. This is the start of your life’s journey to your true self.
All The Experiences You Want To Have In Your Life
Now that you know what your ‘perfect’ life does look like, you can work towards it and make a list of everything that you want to experience on this journey.
This is simpler than creating your ‘perfect’ life because you can just write out all experiences you want to have in life. Make sure to write I will in front of the experience, “I will become financially free” or “I will have 7% bodyfat at 180lbs”. This will motivate you to actually take action on it and become motivated.
Take your life areas and write down what you want to experience in that area, write down at least 5 things. To help you with this exercise, here are some examples
- I will take part in an esports tournament (fun)
- I will skydive at least once in my life (fun)
- I will marry a beautiful woman (relationships)
- I will have had 9 bed partners in my life (fun/relationships)
Again, nothing is right or wrong, write it out and review later if YOU really want it or that it comes from a different place. Like, what someone is expecting from you.
When you’ve written all these experiences, events or situations down, you know what to do to achieve your ‘perfect’ life.
Now I’ve got a little action for you to do if you really want to achieve this ‘perfect’ life. Pick up a piece of paper and a pen, now write down 10 things from your list of experiences you want to have as fast as possible. These are your goals for the next 365 days. Make an action plan per goal and make sure you take continuous action on at least one goal every day. You’ll move closer and closer to the goals and may achieve 80% of them.
Be realistic. Be optimistic. Take action!
The Ultimate Way To Create Your Legacy
This is the contribution part of your life. It’s about your place in this world, what you want to leave behind. This is your part in this world, your part in making the world a better place for every generation that will come after you. It can be simple and small or complex and big. No right or wrong, except for when it’s against the law, of course.
There’s one really good visualization exercise you can do to create your legacy. This is something I learned from the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change*. It’s the first book I read on my journey to become the best version of myself, I really recommend you read it. Okay, the exercise.
You are walking towards the entrance of a building on your own. Around you are 100 people who are crying, screaming and in a sad mood. When you’re walking beside them it seems like they don’t see you, so you walk inside. When you are inside you see your family, friends, colleagues and other people you’ve never seen. They’re also crying and sad. Again, it doesn’t look like they’re able to see you.
You walk further and come into the front of the building, there’s a coffin with a picture of you on it. You finally realize what’s happening, it’s YOUR funeral!
Now, ask yourself, what are they going to say about you? Are they going to say that you were a loving husband and a good father? Or are they’re going to say that you were always gossiping about other people? What is your family going to say? Or your friends? And your colleagues?
Is this what you want them to say about you? No? Then what is it that you want them to say about you? That you were the most loving person in the world?
Ask yourself as many questions as you can come up with and write it down! This will help you to look at it later or adjust it.
Write out what you want them to say about you.
- Family (spouse, kids, parents, siblings)
- Friends (best friends, business friends)
- Other people (people you bumped into, people you only met once, people you influenced in any way)
Now go work on it EVERY DAY! You never know when your life will end, maybe tonight (don’t be scared) or maybe over 100 years.
Why You Should Be Flexible With Your Life Vision
Now we’ve got everything kinda figured out for you, I have to tell you the most important thing with this concept. And that is to be very flexible when it comes down to how you will achieve your ‘perfect’ life.
This is something that I had to learn the hard way. When I was 17 years old and determined to turn my whole life around I took 3 months to plan my life forward. I had exactly step by step plans I would follow for every area of my life, especially the financial area. I would first publish Kindle books, automate the process, Amazon FBA, automate that and so on and on.
When I actually published my first Kindle book, not written by me, I didn’t like it. It failed miserably, as most first attempts do, and I did not have the drive to try a new one. For others it might work, maybe they like it, I didn’t. I felt like a failure because I had the plan but it didn’t seem to work for me and it wasn’t what I thought it would be.
I had to go through this process a few times with other things to come to realize that it’s not weird to find out something that you don’t like. You’re not a failure if you plan for something but it doesn’t seem to work out. As long as the goal stays the same, but even that can change.
So when creating this life vision, try to be specific as possible wherever you can but don’t beat yourself up if you don’t know exactly how you want some things to turn out. It will change over the years, maybe you wanted children but now you’re in a relationship and really enjoy it without. Nothing is wrong or right.
And if a certain method of achieving a goal is not working out for you try something out. Be in the experiment mode, and when you find something you like, take MASSIVE action on it!
The only constant in life is change, so be flexible or be frustrated, your CHOICE.
If you’ve read this article all the way to down here you’re probably pretty serious about this part of your life, as am I.
Before you move on to your other tasks for the day make sure you start with at least one of the above things I’ve written. Start with examining your behavior towards others or write down all possible areas of your life, DO SOMETHING. Don’t let me hang here, take some sort of action because you’ve read this article. Don’t let me down.
I hope that I have helped you with being more proactive about where your life is going if only bringing your aggressive behavior into consciousness so that you could replace it with compassion.
If it helped you in any way, I’m happy.
